# Roles and what they can do

> The five roles and what each one can see and change

Every person in the app has one of five roles, on a ladder. The engine checks the ladder on every write. The app does not grey out or hide most controls by role, so an edit above your rank is silently ignored and the screen shows it as saved; adding a record above your rank is refused with an error.

## The ladder

| Role | Rung | What the engine lets them do |
| ----------------- | ---- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| apprentice | 1 | See what staff see: customers, accounts, properties, equipment, work orders, appointments, quotes, purchase orders, suppliers, products, stock materials, checklists, invoices, calls, texts and voicemails. File their own hours and time off. Change nothing else. |
| technician | 2 | Everything above, plus create, change and delete customers, accounts, properties, equipment, work orders and line items, quotes, purchase orders, suppliers, products, stock materials, checklists, tasks, notes, stock lists, calls, texts, voicemails and callbacks. Change an appointment only when they are one of its technicians. |
| senior technician | 3 | The same as a technician. The rung exists so an admin can rank people. |
| admin | 4 | Everything above, plus see and approve timesheets and time off, see payments and subscriptions, change or delete any appointment, and set roles. |
| super admin | 5 | Everything above, plus the Twilio error pushes. |

## Setting a role

* An admin or a super admin sets roles. Nobody sets their own, nobody grants a role above their own rung, and nobody changes the role of someone above them.
* A new app user starts as an apprentice.
* An extension is set by a developer, in the engine. Nobody sets their own, and there is no screen for anyone else's; see [How extensions and personal lines work](/handbook/phone/reach-an-agent-by-extension).
